What is PROTEA?
PROTEA Behavioral Health Services is a licensed Mental Health Agency established in recognition of the overwhelming need for mental and behavioral health services throughout Maine. From our office in Bangor, and from satellite offices in other communities, we provide services to individuals of all ages with special needs as well as support to the clients’ respective families.

Philosophy
PROTEA’s philosophy of considering the whole person governs our approach to client care. Client care cannot be provided in isolation. Effective services must focus on all aspects of the client’s environment. This may include home, school and community. Comprehensive care often involves several service providers from a variety of disciplines. We believe that it is essential to ensure a seamless and effective team approach to client care. The agency’s goal is to Promote the health and well being of our clients and staff. We recognize the importance of setting Realistic goals and objectives for clients as well as staff and to create an environment conducive to meeting those goals and objectives. Opportunities in life appear when people effect change in their behaviors by increasing their knowledge. Life certainly includes its rough moments. Through those times people need Encouragement and support. Advancement holds many connotations for clients and staff. Synonyms include development, improvement, progress and evolution — all words and concepts that clearly reflect the agency’s philosophy.

Historical Perspective
PROTEA opened its doors on January 15, 2001, in about 1,200 square feet of space, with seven staff. The intention was to provide BS-I services to a small number of children. Since then the Agency’s growth has been dramatic. In addition to the expanding complex in downtown Bangor on Exchange Street, the Agency has developed satellite offices in Machias, Calais, Waterville, Wilton and Hallowell. As of January 15, 2004, our 3rd anniversary, PROTEA employed more than 100 staff and approximately 190 licensed mental health clinicians contracted as professional affiliates throughout Maine serving individuals of all ages.

Working closely with the Department of Behavioral & Developmental Services (BDS) and MaineCare (Medicaid), PROTEA has focused on addressing clearly identified shortages of services in communities throughout the State. PROTEA offers a full range of Mental Health and Substance Abuse services, including Out-patient Therapy, Medication Management, Psychological Testing, Substance Abuse and DEEP services to all ages and In-Home Support Services to children.
